Flowers of Thailand – Chiang Mai Orchid
Since the propagation of orchids spread from royalty down to the common people it has flourished into a billion baht industry. Thailand is now world-famous as an exporter of the finest orchids. Thai gardeners have managed to create rare and precious orchids, for example the pure white orchid of which there are only six known specimens that have been found in the wild. The country would be unable to export orchids found in the wild as they are protected by some good environmental laws, however orchids bred artificially are regularly exported to buyers and growers all over the world who all enjoy fine examples of the celebrated Thai orchid.
The epicentre of this proliferation of orchid growth is Northern Thailand. Most people around Thailand and the rest of the world are limited to growing orchids in heated greenhouses, the people of Chiang Mai are lucky to live in the perfect climate for optiumum orchid growth and gardeners can can grow orchids easily out in the open. Because of these favourable conditions, a large number of nurseries have taken root in Chiang Mai and these are where most of the orchids of Thailand come from. Some of these are commercial orchid farms, some are tourist attractions and some are both.
There are two main seasons for orchids that you should take into account if planning a visit to Chiang Mai. There is a short season in August, which is the rainy season, however the orchid is able to store water for many months with the result that January is the main flowering season all over Thailand. Any visitors to Chiang Mai at this time will be astounded by an astounding diversity of colour and beautiful flowers.
