can anyone explain contituent assembly? *Lenin?
Lenin was Chairman of the Council and from this position he could claim to be the new leader of Russia. Lenin went ahead with elections for a Constituent Assembly which had been promised by the Provisional Government.
can anyone explain this please? does it mean that lenin went ahead with an election to see who should be in power, or that he did an election to see who should be in power with the bolsheviks? or neither??

The idea behind the Russian Constituent Assembly was first mooted by the Provisional Government immediately after the February Revolution. It was to be elected by all Russian citizens and its function was to produce a new constitution, detailing exactly the form of government that Russia was to have. The Provisional Government decided not to hold the elections until after the end of WWI.
Before the October Revolution one of Lenin's promises was to hold elections for the Assembly. Elections were held on the 12th November 1917. The Bolsheviks came second in the election - it was won by the Socialist Revolutionary Party, who gained 17,490,000 votes and 370 deputies. The Bolsheviks gained 9,844,000 votes and 175 deputies.
Because, Lenin argued, the Supreme Soviet, and the Sovnarkcom (the Russian Cabinet) represented the working peoples of the Empire through the Bolshevik Party, then the Supreme Soviet was the more democratic body, and so he shut down the Constituent Assembly at gunpoint.
Lenin held government posts - Chairman of the Sovnarkom and Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Russian SFSR - but surprisingly not party posts, although he was the de facto leader of the Bolshevik Party. The Left Socialist Revolutionary Party were in government with the Bolsheviks until March 1918, when they walked out in protest at the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
