Sharing The Road
Drivers need to know and understand that they do not own the roads. Rather, there are several other groups of people that motorists need to take into consideration and who can be put into danger if a motorist decides that he or she always owns the road. Conversely, cyclists need to review the rules for road safety and be weary of distracted drivers who may unintentionally sideswipe a and other bodily injuries If you have children and want to take them out for a walk or to ride their bicycles, make sure that they know and understand what the rules are.
In states such as New York (where I am originally from), you will see that the vast majority of roadways have bike lanes assigned to them. So that there is no confusion, these bike lanes are designated by a solid white line on the right hand side of the road with either the words “bike lane” written out on the roadway or by a painted image of a bicycle that is affixed to the roadway. This provides cyclists with a specific space within which to ride their bikes, and it makes drivers aware of this same fact. And while there is no designated “running” lane on the roads, runners can still run in the road as long as they exercise their better judgment in doing so. For example, it may not be the best idea to run into a busy roadway during rush hour traffic.
On the one hand, you have the motorists who feel that because they can travel the fastest, they should automatically have the right of way wherever there is a paved pathway. On the other hand, you have the cyclists, many of whom feel that they have earned the right to ride their bicycles in the roadways with the cars because the sidewalks are not really equipped to handle the speed with which they travel. Perhaps rightly so, having cyclists travel on the sidewalk is incredibly dangerous as the true purpose of a sidewalk is to provide an area for people to “walk” on. Lastly, you have the runners (not to be confused with joggers). Serious runners, while they don't necessarily prefer the roadways, also find it somewhat annoying to have to share the sidewalk with people who are out for a leisurely stroll or who have children and are taking up the sidewalk to begin with. So, how do you choose who gets what?
The other night, I was driving back from the mall with my boyfriend. Because it was a weeknight, the main roads near our apartment were relatively quiet, which was nice, because this meant that I didn't have to worry about other drivers tailgating me, cutting each other off or be weary of pedestrians who looked as if they just might throw themselves under the long line of cars in an effort to cross the street.
