How to Treat Sore Gums
If you have sore gums and you have passed the stage of teething, something is wrong. Your gums only get sore to indicate that there is an underlying problem. The leading cause of sore gums in adults is the onset of gum disease, also known as gingivitis or periodontitis. If you don’t fully remove plaque on teeth it eventually hardens into a substance called calculus. The only way to remove calculus is through scraping; the degree of scraping relates to the quantity of calculus on the tooth.
By the time you experience sore gums, you can be pretty sure that you have some active gingivitis. The calculus provides a perfect setting for anaerobic bacteria to set to work. Lying there against your teeth and gums, the bacteria create toxins that cause an infection in the gum tissue. Your gums may begin to appear red instead of pink, and you will develop pockets in the gum tissue around the base of your teeth in excess of 3 millimeters. Granted, 3 millimeters doesn’t sound like much, but when it comes to teeth, it is huge.
If you want to stop the process before it moves beyond some sore gums, this is the perfect time to initiate some home based gingivitis treatments. Just as effective, if not more so, than many of the commercially based products, home care can be much less expensive. An initial cleaning, planing, or scaling cycle may be necessary at the beginning of your treatment, but with good oral care and gum treatments at home, you can expect to see healthy gums emerge once again.
It is estimated that 40-80% of adults have gum disease. Most of these people don’t even realize that something is wrong since a majority of dentists don’t counsel their patients properly about early gum disease. Any sign of gum soreness or bleeding is abnormal and should be tended to promptly. Gum disease doesn’t wait, and neither should you.
