Chat Moderation
Moderation comes in many different forms but are essentially all covered by the process of eliminating or lessening extremes. It is used to ensure normality or an adherence to set standards throughout the medium on which it is being conducted. On Internet websites which invite users to post comments, a moderation system is the method the webmaster or moderator chooses to sort contributions which are irrelevant, obscene, illegal, or insulting with regards to useful or informative contributions.
Chat Moderation is one of the forms included in this system. The main task is to regulate chat or conversations within the host website. Far from spying or prying, this form of moderation is employed to ensure that users do not clash over trivial and off-topic issues that could easily be prevented by proper decorum and a consciousness in posting. But since users are a mixed population with opinions and views that deviate drastically from one persons point of thought to the other, issues within a chat room have the formula for potential trouble. That is where Chat Moderation comes in. A webmaster or operator performs moderation tasks based on the overall direction of the chat and the possible implications of words and opinions posted. Also considering chat sessions exchanging illegal information, data links, copyrighted material sources and other forms of unethical activity. Anything that is deemed as a potential threat to the harmony and dignity of the chat session is omitted or subjected to review and eventual ruling based on the regulations set by the host or client.
Consider an example of a conversation via chat where one user posts a mild racial joke in lighthearted jest but on a chat room comprised mostly of race-sensitive chatters. The post's innocence based on the user's intention is not taken lightly and a huge group of users flood the site with retorts and complaints therefore impeding the website's functionality and purpose. Chat Moderators regulate these types of content whether it was posted with intent of causing trouble or not. Remember that most offensive posts are the product of ignorance not of malicious intent.
