How to cancel a hotel booking
Hotel reservations make travelling a lot easier, in fact in many cases it is impossible to get a room without a reservation. Unfortunately sometimes peoples plans change and they are unable to use the hotel room that they booked. In most cases it is possible to cancel a hotel booking but this will depend on how you booked. The way to cancel a booking will also depend on how you booked your hotel room.
Travellers who book their hotel room directly from the hotel will need to actually contact the hotel itself in order to cancel their reservation. This normally needs to be done by phone. The policy of most hotels is that you must give 24 hours notice to cancel a booking or you will have to pay for the first night. This is because the hotel won't have time to find somebody else to take the room if you don't give them enough notice.
Hotel rooms booked through online travel sites can usually be cancelled by visiting the site. Usually by clicking on the My Account link you can follow the instructions to cancel your booking. Most sites will require that you give them 48 hours notice to cancel. If you want to cancel with less than 48 hours but more than 24 you can usually do this by calling the hotel and cancelling directly with them. Usually the reservation fee charged by online booking websites is not refundable.
Prepaid reservations that are made through the travel websites or your travel agent may or may not be cancelled, the policy on this varies. You will need to check the confirmation email they send you to see what the policy on cancellations is. If you are allowed to cancel the instructions will be clearly explained and you will need to follow them. Even if you can cancel your Prepaid reservation there will likely be penalties involved so it is a good idea to try to avoid this if at all possible. If you are able to cancel your booking the refund will be credited to your credit card, how long this takes will depend on your bank but expect at least 3 days.
